Social DancesThe Social dances are easy and very much fun to do, but, since they are for the pleasure of the participants, and not for an audience, they are seldom seen on stage.The "old" social dances include simple couple dances such as the Schottisch, Waltz, and Polka. And easy mixers, such as Familie Sekstur, Totur fra Veijle, and Stockholms Schottis. And wonderful couple dances peculiar to the region, such as Sønderhoning and Hambo. And sequence couple dances, such as Russeren. And then there are many set dances in square or contra formation. The most well-known square dance is Les Lanciers, which is 200 years old. [I need to rewrite this so that it doesn't seem that most Danish folk dances are anti-social. Of course folk dances are inherently social, but they are often hyper-choreographed for performance.] |
